California payroll tax and SDI.

California payroll tax often refers to the state items an employer handles through payroll. For employees, the most visible item is SDI withholding. Employers also deal with unemployment insurance, the Employment Training Tax, and other obligations through the California Employment Development Department.

Workers compensation insurance protects employees after work-related injuries, but it is generally an employer cost rather than a line item withheld from an employee paycheck. Family leave benefits in California are connected to the SDI program, so SDI helps fund paid family leave and disability benefits.

The Employment Development Department publishes rules for state payroll reporting, unemployment insurance, and disability insurance, and your employer or payroll provider applies those rules when it calculates withholding. Federal tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

Federal income tax uses marginal brackets from 10% to 37%, applied after the federal standard deduction or itemized deductions. Only the dollars inside each bracket are taxed at that bracket's rate. FICA is the Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax, and it is the same in every state. Employees pay Social Security tax at 6.2% up to the annual wage base and Medicare tax at 1.45% on all wages.
